Intelligence on TV (ALT: cheering for John):

Check to the behind the scenes on the TV show from my friend John Dixon’s debut novel (out fall 2013). The show stars Sawyer from LOST & Catherine Willow from CSI.

John was one of my FIRST crit partners back when WL was a short story, & we were both unpublished & teaching (me uni & him high school). I am crazy elated to see his debut novel get optioned and adapted as a television program too!

I re-signed the option just last month, so they are still committed enough to making it that they keep giving me checks. I KNOW it’s been a long process so far, and I know that there are a dozen things that would excite readers to hear that I can’t share, but what I CAN share is that they are working on it AND they tell me we should have big movement soon.

I absolutely love the Wicked Lovely series, especially Ink Exchange. Niall, Irial and Leslie completely fascinate me! Just wondering, as I can't quite remember, did Leslie ever have a last name? It's a little detail that keeps bugging me

You know, I’m not actually sure if she ever did in the series. Ash’s was Foy, & Seth is Morgan. I’m not sure Leslie ever had a surname listed. Now, I wonder if her last name was listed or not …

Lately, I’ve left myself notes saying “kill her” & “must kill soon” & “too long since death happened?”

Tonight I had an urge to add a note saying: “These notes are for book. I’m not a killer! :)”

Personally, I think the smiley face really helps that sound more believable … or happily delusional? Hard to say at this point in the day. Killing will wait. Sleepy author must crash now.

The UK publisher of my co-authored middle-grade book posted this picture online. Not that adult readers aren’t wonderful (you are!), but this little girl with her stuffed toy & LOKI’S WOLVES is just darling! Thx to the young reader and to Little,Brown (and to the mom who sent it) for posting this!

In my experience, it’s not the writing that eats your time, soul, & sanity. I love writing. It’s, by far, the best part of my job. What kills my time is the miscellaneous Other Stuff we need to do. The worst part sometimes is the stepping back & seeing that yes, there are typically reasons for each of those damn emails, but some days I think they breed in the inbox.

Here are some of my strategies for attempting sanity:

1) TV is the Devil— Get rid of the TV unless it’s a program you watch with one of your kids or spouse (and even then, DVR it so you can eliminate the 20min/hr of commercials).

2) Schedules— I have a big ol’ writable wall schedule with 4 different colours of marker (one for me, spouse, daughter, teen son—the baby is the same colour as spouse’s or my schedule depending on which of us has that appt).

3) Blackouts (not the drinking sort; try to avoid those).— I keep “blackout dates” come hell or high water. My kids’ birthdays, Oct 31, & Winter Solstice are “even the President would get turned down that day” dates for me. Block out vacations or stay-cations for family time too. Institute “no tech at the table” (NO calls or texts or email allowed during meals. NO exceptions).

4) Dancing Partners—Let other parties know the importance of schedule. Stress to your editors that if they’re late, you will be too. My schedule if a carefully coordinated machine. Tinkering with one element has ripple down impacts. Editor A is late on notes? Well, they’ll have to wait till I finish copyedits for Editor B.

5) Get away— I retreat several times a year (sometimes alone, & sometimes w others). On average, I write 20-30k when I go away for a week. (Pack pain meds & wrist supports to allow this.)

6) Fun goals/timely application—My goals are sorta selfish and not about the market. I want to do a contemporary, a picture book, a co-authored book, a straight-up SF, a dual timeline … but I look at the market to let me know which of my goals I can tackle without my agent thwacking me.

7) Vent— Accept that no matter what you do someone (usually several someones) will say you suck/sold out/aren’t as good as X/shoulda stuck with Q when you do it. (When this happens I suggest re-visiting your goal list and/or venting to a writer friend who inevitably has had the same experience.)

As some of you know, my daughter Asia makes Boston her home these days, and she is a runner (completing several half-marathons so far). She was at the site of the bombing that day & missed it by less than 10 minutes, so this one was too close for comfort for me personally.
